The Shadow of a Star

He looked up at the midnight sky
just to see what was in the heavens
and if his gods would smile or tear
and rain the leakage from their eyes.
His lips parted and his eyes grew wide
at the falling of a shooting star
and he wondered what would happen
to the shadow of that star.

She stood in the fields behind her house
and sighed a tremendous lament
to see the falling of a shooting star.
She wondered idly if perhaps
it wasn't a sign from God
or if it was just a science
formed by the shadow of a star.

They met underneath a throw blanket of stars
knitted billions of years ago
by a force they couldn't quite understand.
And as they held hands and watched the sky
together they saw a star fall
and remembered the shadow of a star.
